CHRYSLER is about to break new ground with its Dodge brand in Australia by becoming the first car maker to offer free comprehensive insurance.

Marketing manager Mike Ross said: "Essentially anyone with a driver's licence will get two years' full comprehensive insurance on a new Dodge model."

Underwritten by QBE Insurance, the policy comes with a $450 basic excess and will be issued to buyers regardless of their age or address and has the potential to save buyers several thousand dollars.

The company said there were no plans to extend the insurance initiative to its other brands.
